Clinical Analysis on Venomous Snake Bite in Korea



Abstract
Clinical observation was made in 183 patients with snake bite who received treatment at Chungnam University Hospital for 4 years from Jan. 1978 to Dec. 1981.
3 out of the 14 species of Korean snakes are poisonous. These species are Agkistroden Saxatilis, Agkistrendon Blomboffii Brevicaudus and Agkistrodon Calaginosuss.
The results were as follows:
1) The annual distribution was appeared to increase year after year and it was most frequent in August.
2) The sex ratioof male to female was 2 : 1.
3) According to age distribution, it was most prevalent in 5th decade.
4) The accidents were occurred on the field in 38 cases (74.5%) and the bitten site was foot in 78 cases (42.6%).
5) The fang mark was only two in almost all cases (99.4%).
6) The time interval from an accident to the arrival at hospital was between 2 hours and 3 hours in 71 cases (38.8%).
7) Local edema and pain were appeared in all cases.
8) The overall mortality rate was 2.1%.
9) The most frequent complication was lymphadenitis in 9 cases (4.9%).
10) The duration of admission was within 24 hours in 147 cases (80.3%).
